Psychoanalysis

Training Psychoanalyst in Austin, Texas

Psychoanalytic Services for Lasting Change

If your conflicts feel long-standing and ingrained, psychoanalysis can offer a deeper, more effective treatment than traditional therapy. This approach allows you to work through your struggles with another human being in a profound way.

You might be facing difficulties in relationships, stagnancy in your career, or struggling to find meaning in your life. Perhaps you notice yourself repeating behaviors that even you don't fully understand, possibly engaging in self-sabotage. Advice from family and friends, self-help books, or even strong determination might have failed to bring about the change you seek. Or you may have an anxious or gloomy personality, therapy and medications haven’t worked. Psychoanalysis might help.

I bring a warm, personal, and relational approach to psychoanalysis, integrating different theories rather than adhering to one. After medical school and working in different settings, I pursued further training to become a psychoanalyst. This journey involved four years of intensive coursework, supervision, and my own treatment. Then I became board certified in psychoanalysis through the American Psychoanalytic Association and subsequently became a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Houston. I am passionate about teaching. I have taught for many years at Dell Medical School and currently teach at the psychoanalytic institute in Houston. Additionally, I provide consultation and supervision to psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and mental health professionals training at the psychoanalytic institute.

Following an initial consultation to determine if psychoanalysis is the right approach for you, we would typically meet three to four times a week, often using a psychoanalytic couch. The recommended length of analysis varies, but as treatment progresses, patients usually recognize its benefits and decide how long they wish to continue.

Are you a Good Fit for Psychoanalysis?

Those who benefit most have the following traits:

The capacity to form an effective trusting relationship with the analyst.
A basic understanding of psychological theory.

People considered best suited to psychoanalytic treatment include those with long-standing conflicts deeply entrenched in his or her personality and present with:

Psychoanalysis is not usually considered suitable for patients suffering from severe depression or such psychotic disorders as schizophrenia. It is also not appropriate for people with addictions or substance dependency, disorders of aggression or impulse control, or acute crises.
